The rocks speak, tell us their stories: Serranía del Hornocal
Serranía de Hornocal has the unique appearance of having been painted with an airbrush, like a gigantic graffiti.
Nowadays this geological patrimony, is the great tourist attraction of the province. The beauty of the landscape, its colours and its imposing size make it daily visited by tourists from different parts of the country and the world.
Vivee experiences recommends us travel and know Latin America as this beautiful gift of nature is located in the Argentinean province of Jujuy, about twenty five kilometers from the city of Humahuaca.
It is part of a calcareous formation known as Yacoraite, which consists of a successive overlap of coloured veins (up to fourteen shades), each corresponding to a different mineral. Yacoraite extends linearly from Peru, passing through Bolivia and the Quebrada de Humahuaca in the aforementioned Jujuy to end in Salta, these last two places already in Argentina. Its altitude is considerable, at 4,761 m.a.s.l.
We must recognize the mountains of the Hornocal in a context of landscape in which we must understand all those processes that led to the formation of a relief and then modeling. The mountain ranges of the Hornocal are a conclinal of the Cretaceous age, that is to say they have between 130 to 65 million of years.
Its curious and colorful colors are due to the depositing environments of the sediments. We would be talking about continental atmosphere, beach atmosphere and again Continental, because when the rocks have intense colors such as red or yellow indicate that the environment is oxidizing, ie in continental areas while the colors more Dark indicates the low-oxidizing marine environment.
After paying the entrance to the representative of the indigenous community, once we are above the hill, we only have to enjoy and let us carry through the senses; not only the view, which is clear that will be the most active, but also by the ear appreciating the gentle sound of the wind. Also, it will probably motivate the smell, especially if in our ascent we find cows or guanacos grazing.
And it will only be added that from that viewpoint we hardly perceive a minimum part, since the multicolored Serranía extends about 11 kilometers. Heritage of humanity, which gives us the best panoramic views.
Another attraction is the route to reach the viewpoint that runs through landscapes of puneños environments.
It is important to mention that the best time of day to visit the Serranía del Hornocal (the Hill of 14 colors) is in the afternoon because, the sun in those hours, highlights its different colors.
